This is the first time I've taught this book and would like feedback about what activities were challenging and interesting to you, as well as activities you didn't care for. These things might be small 2 minute activities in class, video segments, ethnographic studies, group work, supplemental reading, etc. What was interesting and useful / what was boring and useless?
Your comment should contain at least one positive and one negative (but you can write as much as you want). Also be sure to explain why you feel the way you do about each. If you're feeling especially creative you might suggest some activities that might be added.

Mr.Andree you did a great job teaching part time Indian. The activity we did were really fun and enjoyable. I would only change the way you short responses. I would make them do it with their group. So they can talk about it.

One way you should change your teaching style for the book "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian".Is that you should not have a open response every day after a chapter. That you should give them a test every week about the chapters you read during the course of the week.
I think that you can give a chapter test at the end of the week and have 2 essays instead of one. You can also have the final project as a 5 paragraph essay describing how racism was back then and how it is today.
ReplyDeleteI think that if you were to give them more time on the quick writes. to make sure that they get all the information in the writing. You should have more group work them by them self. it would make it a little more better then doing every thing by your self

I think something you should change when reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian with the future classes is that you should change having a quick write everyday after you read a chapter. On the quick writes kids sometimes struggle with the question you ask and if they do bad there whole grade goes down by a lot. To change this you could have a quick write only sometimes and have other kind of tests like short answer tests or multiple choice questioned quizzes.
I think that you should give the future classes more time for quick writes because some kids can't write all of their thoughts in the time you give us. I also think that instead of the big essay at the end of the book you should make a test with multiple choice and short answer questions.
ReplyDeleteInstead of having the writing tests after each chapter you should have a test after each 2 weeks or 1 week. Like a multiple choice quiz and have options for a essay and you choose 1 essay question.
ReplyDeletei dont think you should change anything about the way you taught part time indian i like the fact that you didnt make us write more than two paragraphs.
ReplyDeleteI think you should do more activities to do for the readings like more physical things that are entertaining. You should keep the essays because it forces us to read the the chapter. I think the book was great and a real good read.
ReplyDeleteI think that you should tell the classes when we will have a quiz on the chapter so they can go over what they read.I also think you should give them the question before hand so that they can make sure they have all of the information they need. As for the big essay at the end of the book i think you should give the classes 1 and 1/2 classes to finish it so that they can make an outline then right a draft and then the next class they can wright a final draft.
ReplyDeleteI think that you did a great job teaching the book, however, I think that instead of doing a quick write everyday, you should give multiple choice or fill in the blank quizzes at the end of each week. I also think that for the test on the whole book, you should give 2 classes, because most kids were unable to finish it in 1 mod.
ReplyDeleteMr.Andree, i liked how we discused the book in class, and the projects we did as a class together. I didn't like that every day after we read a ch. we had to write a paragraph for a short amount of time, maybe 15 min. would be enough time.
ReplyDeleteKyleigh Good Mod:7
ReplyDeleteI think another way to teach the Part-time Indian book is instead of the essay at the end of the book you shoul let each group act out what they thought was the most important chapter/chapters of the book. Also along with the groups that each quick write we should have more time and we should be able to discuss it with our groups unless we didnt read it.
Jennifer Hughes mod: 7
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the book should not be taught in class. I did not like the way you taught it either. I prefer to do more physical, moving around projects. Yet it is one of the books that must be taught so i think you should make it more projects and less writing. You should have a quick write each day in the being of class but then let kids move around and do more hands-on projects after that.

ReplyDeleteThis book was a realization for me. It really taught me the realizem of the world. I liked how the book was writin with humor dispite the fact that horrible thing were happening to junior. i liked the little essays we had to do because it was an easy grade if you read the chapter. it was a great, realistic book that had all things teenager.
I like how every once and a while you let us leason to sherman alexie read his book. I also like the video that we watch during this. The one thing that I did not like ishow there was alot of writing I think that we could of done more active thing. For example make each group come up with a quick skit and proform it to the class.
ReplyDeleteMr. Andree you did a good job teaching, i mean that's your job right? Anyways, in addition to the fun and enjoyable activities there should be more funny movie or video clips that tie the book together with the real world.
ReplyDeletei think that you did a good job teaching the book. you could give us more time for the quick writes maybe 15 min. Also for the final essay give us xmod to finish or 2 days. i like the 10 thousand hours thing.
ReplyDeleteI liked the way you taught the book and all of the activities. The short paragraphs i think you should give us more time. The questions on the book you gave us were good but for the future classes you should give them more time so they get better grades.
ReplyDeleteKatelyn Bergenheim Mod:2
ReplyDeleteI think the small quick writes were fun. You should give more time on them though. Also id prefer reading it in class. Otherwise your teaching of the book was great.
i liked when we would discuss a question in our group that you gave us rather than answering individually. the reason why i liked this was because we got to work together and listen to each others ideas, not just our own. but, i also liked when we would get a short answer essay to do at the beginning of class. i liked this because it gave me a chance to review / remember what was in the chapter that we had to read the following night. doing this also makes kids read that don't like to because they will seem stupid if they are just sitting there not doing anything because they didn't read the chapter assigned. with these short answer essays i also didn't like them because of the short amount of time that we had to do them. with this short amount of time some people don't finish because they do not know exactly what to write when you first assign the question. i also wish that we could have done some type of writing assignment that was more moving around instead of just sitting at our desks writing a long essay. having this would make it more entertaining and maybe make some of the students pay more attention in class.

ReplyDeleteI think the book was a great book. You should give more time for quick writes. I liked how you gave us 45 minutes to work on the final test. Overall, I think the book was a great read and you should teach it every year.
I think that the videos where helpful to see multi views of the story. You should have more class descustions about the book and help them understand it more
ReplyDeleteyou did a great job teaching the book for the first time. the only thing that i would change is have the "quick write" essays not count for as many points and have one big test at the end of a week and have that count for more points. That way the kids English grade doesnt go down as much if they miss one quick write
ReplyDeleteI think you did a good job teaching the book. One thing you could change is that on the quick writes you could give more time because you ask for a lot of info on the question and like three to five minutes is not enough time to give a good answer. I really liked how in class you let us listen to the recording of Sherman Alexie. It was really cool to her how he actually tells the story of his life. You should do the more often in class.
ReplyDeletei didn't like the holiday, wake or parent ethnography projects. i do like the one we are doing now, about our community. i also didn't like defending the book because i didn't like the book that much. I also liked the joy list, it made me think more about my life then i usually would.
ReplyDeleteMr.Andree I think you did a pretty good job teaching the book for the first time. One of the things I liked was when you showed videos that corresponded with the book. I liked them because they let our brains take a little break from thinking. They were also entertaining so they made me want to focus more on the next activity you gave us. Plus they gave me a different perspective on what was going on in the book. I got a perspective from someone else's eyes. The one thing that I thought was really cool was the 10,000 hours thing that you showed us. It made me realize just how hard you had to work to become great at anything. It was one of those things that really got me thinking. Another thing I liked was having the chapters to read for homework every night because they were a short easy read that didn't make me feel like I was actually doing homework. Something I think you need to work on is making the class discussions a little more fun. Some of of the discussions were pretty fun but some were pretty boring. I liked the discussions when you asked for our opinions on stuff and we could use our imaginations off of that. Another thing that I think you need to work on is giving us a little more time on the quick-write quizzes and giving us the grade sheet sooner so we could have know what we were being graded on. Other than that I think you did a pretty good job teaching the book.
ReplyDeleteI thought the way you taught the book was fun and interesting. I didn't like the quick right things about the book that we stored in our binders. I thought we should have taken notes on every chapter. Then at the end of the chapter have a big test or writing assignment only using the notes or chapter summaries. I did like the videos a lot. It helped me understand the book more. I think you should have us do skits after every cuple of chapters. I thought that would have been fun and funny to watch.
ReplyDeleteWhen you taught the book I liked having group assignments instead of working by ourselves. Working as a group gives us more ideas to think about. I don’t like when you would give us little time to right a short answer (a quick write). You should give us time to think about the question, and then give us a couple minuets. I understand the purpose of the quick writes but just give us more time to think. For the first time introducing this book to our class, you did a great job. You should so this again next year even though it wouldn’t be your first time.
ReplyDeleteI think the only thing you should do next year is either cut down the number of sentences on the quick writes or give the students more time to write it. I needed more time to think and I didn't have enough time to write 7-9 sentences.
ReplyDeleteI think you did a good job teaching the book. I think the best thing you did was how you let us discuss parts of the book in our groups and think about how other people were taking in the book in different ways. Something you could do better is the short amount of time we had on the free writes or you could cut down the amount of necessary sentences. 3-4 minutes isn't enough time for me to write 7-9 good sentences.
ReplyDeleteMr Andree, I liked the 10,000 hour thing that we did with this book because it showed how if you kept trying at something you could do really well.I enjoyed the little videos we saw in class and I think that next year you should show more of them. I also think next year the kids should get more time to work on quick writes or they should be able to work in groups on them because sometimes it's hard to get everything down in a short time. The rest of the way you taught it was good.
ReplyDeletePTI was an enjoyable book that was easy to relate to. You should teach it every year. No matter what some parents have to say about it, because im sure that every single year most of the kids will enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteMr. Andree, I think you did a great job teaching this book, especially for the first time. I like how we did the 10,000 thing. I also liked how we did the Queen Bees and Wannabes study. I liked how we discussed the book together as a class. Watching the videos and doing different ethnographic studies was fun. One thing I didn't like is that how we had such little time for our quick writes. Maybe about 10 minutes or so depending on the question asked would be enough. Overall, I think you did a great job teaching the book and you really don't need to change anything about the way you teached the book.
ReplyDeleteMr. Andre, I think that this was a great book and its so realistic that you wouldn't believe that its a true story..... so great job on picking out the book. I liked how we discussed the book after every chapter we read and that you also let us listen to the way Sherman Alexie wrote it. Another thing i liked was the way you taught the book. I also liked that we not only read the book in class we also had to read it at home and then you gave us a little quick write on the chapter that we read the night before. What i didn't like was how much time you gave us on the quick write. I think that you didn't give us enough time on the longer ones and even with the short ones, even though they were short i still didn't have enough time sometimes
ReplyDeleteDear Mr Andree i belive your method of teaching this book was fantastic. But you should have giving us some time in class to review befor the test for people like me who forget the book like me.
ReplyDeleteHi Mr. Andree! I liked how you had us watch videos and do other fun activities relating to each individual chapter. Next time, I think you should definatley give more time to write each paragraph though because 7-9 sentences in about 3 minutes just isn't enough to get my point across for a good grade.
ReplyDeleteI think you did a great job teaching the racism in the book. We don't see that much in our school. Something you could change is give us more time to write our responses to your questions. They were excellent questions, no doubt. But I know for sure that sometimes I needed more time to write something out, even the ones that would only take "one minute". I did like how we would always write about the chapter we read last night, though. Sometimes I forget about that chapter. There's only minor things that I would change about your teaching. Overall, you did a great job teaching this book.
ReplyDeleteMr. Andree, This was not a horrible book. I think you did a good job with the open response questions but might need to give us a little more time and it was no way near enough time to write a good descriptive 7-9 sentences. I think we should also answer the book open responses in our group.I think this is a good book to teach because it relates to real life situations.
ReplyDeleteMr. Andree, I think you did a great job teaching this book. I enjoyed how you tied this book to ethnography and I think the micro-community project is a great idea. I do think, however, we need more time to write a top-notch piece of writing. Even for an "easy" question for our best work we around 6 or 7 minutes for us to be confident in the work we are turning in. But overall, I thought you taught this book very well.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I would suggest doing would be, before every quick write, have a small group discussion with our tables, do discuss what the chapter was about, then answer the questions by ourselves like we do now. Also, give the students more time for their quick writes.
ReplyDeleteMod 3
ReplyDeleteWhen you first handed me this book i thought that i would absolutely hate it. But the references, open discussions and mini lessons that you used to present and teach this book made it worth reading and it made it enjoyable. However there were two thing that i did not like out of all of these lessons. One, those "quick writes" at the begining of each class were in my opinion tedious and unnesecery. Perhaps a quiz at the end of each week for the chapters read. The only other thing that i did not like was the lesson on the 10,000 hours and how thats what you do to be good at something like playing an instrument of shooting hoops. The reason why i did not like that was because i don't agree with the 10,000 hours idea i found it to be discouraging and not very realistic.
I think you did a really good job teaching this book to us. How ever there was some things i didnt like. One is the quick rights. I think you should have given more time because you are only giving us 3-5mins to write a whole paragraph. Also I didnt like the essay at the end and how we should defend it. Instead of writting an essay on defending the book we should have written one on how racism has change the world we live in today. One thing i did like was, how you re -read the key events in class and explained them better than the book. Another thing i liked was how you had the recording of his vouce on teape so we could hear what the author sounded like to give us a visual.
ReplyDeleteMr. Andree, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" was unlike any other book I've ever read by a long-shot. I liked how yo tied together the trash-talk and other stuff that some thought of as bad with reasons for it being placed in the book and the true meaning of it all. It interested me with how much thinking could be put into a book and that it can be easy to miss the real meaning in the book unless you read it a few times, like you did in class, which helped. I liked how you also proved to us that the Cleveland Indians and other Native American sports teams were racist when you showed that cartoon that really proved the point you were trying to get across to us. One thing that bugged me about how you taught the book was how you gave us a test from the night before right when we got into class when those who read the book even forgot sometimes. What I think you should have done instead was let us look over the chapter for a quick minute so it isn't enough time for those who didn't read to read, but for us to refresh our memory on what we read the night before. Overall, great job teaching "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian".
ReplyDeleteI think you did a very good job with teaching Part-Time Indian. I liked how you read aloud the parts of the books that were inportant. I also liked the side activities we did like the parents ethnography, and how we watched the movie on the black versus white baby doll. I didn't really like the timed quick rights. Many people could not freely write what they needed to write in the short amount of time given and when they wouldn't peroperly write it, it made therir grade go down a lot. Also, we should have done more interesting things like little skits and all the other fun things that you have us do for other activities. The book was very well taught and it is dafinitly a book i will never forget.
ReplyDeleteMr.Andree, I think you did an awesome job teaching this book. I like the queen bee thing we did. I think i can relate. The planet parent thing was also fun. I also did like the quick essay each morning. The only thing i did not like what you did was how much time you gave us to write the essay for the test. I take a long time to think things out. Even though you gave us longer than usual (thank you) i still didn't get to finish. If we have something like that again or for next year i think you should allow more time or let us finish in team time or x-mod. Over all you did a great job teaching this book and I enjoyed it. I look forward to reading "To kill a mokingbird
ReplyDeleteReading the Absolutely True Diary Of A Part Time Indian was a great choice and im sure most everyone enjoyed it. I liked how the quick writes were the morning after, so no one would forget the key information. if you waited too long.. barely anyone would do as well since they cant remember the chapter. The only thing i would change is for to give a little bit more time with them. i know you run on a tight schedule but i bet people could write down a better response with another minute or two.
ReplyDeleteFor the most part I liked the way you taught the book. Especially when every class or so we broke off from the book and talked about something else, like the queen bee, or 10000 hours. The only tthing I would change is the amount of time for the quick write and final essay.
ReplyDeleteHannah Lerman

I disliked how there was a quick write at the end of each chapter. I think you should have quick writes like very 2 days and a multiple choice quiz or fill in the blank quiz to take place of a quick write. What I did enjoy was the "queen bees and wanna bees" I thought that that was easy to relate too.
Mr. Andree I enjoyed the way you taught " The Absolutly True Diary of a Part - Time Indain". I liked how you gave open responses that made me think diffrently of what each chapter was about. I disliked how we had one everyday. Mabey you could in the future give one or two on certain days of the week. Also give alittle more time. Your best work can not be done in five minutes.
ReplyDeleteMr. Andree, I thought the lessons on the book were great. I did not like the quick writes on every single chapter. They should be on every few. Or, they could be more group involved. That way everyone can add their ideas, and come up with an excellent response. Alone, you may not generate as many ideas.
ReplyDeleteMr. Andree, I thought that this was a great choice of book. It was perfect for our age group because it was realistic and he was going through come of the problems we do. I liked how we rarely read it in the classroom. I think that kids can stay more focused if they are reading it on there own and they know a 3 minute test is going to be on it the next day. When we listen in class sometimes I dont pay attention. I also liked how we heard him himslef read because we know how he wants it to be read. I didnt like the 2 minute tests the next day. I thought it was unfair to grade it like a toes assignment because when we use toes they always stree to go back in the text for examples but when were doing this were not allowed to go back to refresh.
ReplyDeleteI think you did a great job teaching the book for your first time. One thing that you could change for classes in the future is give us more time to right our open responses after each chapter. That is a lot to get it in such a short amount of time. I reallly liked how you showed us videos that related to the book. I also liked that when you sid show the videos, they were about dificult parts of the book to understand, so it made us actually underatand these parts. One more thing is that i liked how we discussed after each chapter, because some chapters i did not really understand too well.
ReplyDeleteMr Andree i believe that you did a great job teching this book. I really enjoyed being able to relate to this kid because I play basketball. I like how you tied in the 10,000 hours because it relates to each person who does it, not just one group of people. I really didnt like havnt such little time to do the "quick" writes yet it did help me to become a faster writer and to not goof around. all in all you did a good job teaching this, and with all of the class discusions we had, even the slackers couldnt not understand this book. in my opinion keep things interesting by tying it in with things that you know the class likes. keep things interesting and FUNNY! sorry for the double negatives.
ReplyDeleteMr.Andree, I feel you did a good job teaching and working through this book. I liked how you made sure to censor it enough to the point that it was appropriate for school but most of the bad parts of the book were kept to keep it realistic. Another aspect of the activities that assisted this book was the 10,000 hours to mastery lesson. I thought those raw numbers really helped me and my peers to appreciate how difficult it is to achieve mastery and how much work, time, and effort really goes into a professional career. One lesson that I detested towards the beginning were the quick writes. Although they did improve once you revised the rubric and gave us more time. Once again good job teaching.

Mr Andree, one thing i liked that you thought about the way you tough Part Time Indian was how we did extra activities about ethnography. One activity i enjoyed was Queen Bees and wanna bees. One thing i disliked was that we never got a lot of time to do quick writes.

ReplyDeleteI really liked the queen bee's and wanna bee's. I think it was interesting to read about. Everyone see's queen bee's everyday. It was interesting to read about someone elses point of view. I think you should teach queen bee's and wanna bee's every year. It ties into the part time indian book. Arnold would be a wanna bee and Penelope would be a queen bee. I really enjoyed the queen bee and wanna bee.
I think if you showed more short videos realating to the book it would add more intrest. All and all i loved the way you taught the part time indian book.
Mr. Andree, I really like all of the activities that we did with Part-Time Indian. The short responses were a great idea on how to check if people read the chapter or not. Although, the downside was when the question was on something very specific that somebody may have forgotten, so even if they read the chapter they would not do well. Another interesting thing was when you made us listen to Sherman Alexie reading because then we got to have an idea of what Arnold sounded like and the funny accent that he had to deal with when talking to others.
ReplyDeleteKatie White Mod:4 Dear Mr. Andree. i liked about this book is how you gave us the quizzes or quick writes. i liked them because they let us go over the chapter and understand the chapter. I also liked how you let us watch videos and read papers. I liked that because if we don't understand the book the movies were other examples of the book so we could understand it better. One thing i did not like is how you only gave us 3 to 5 minutes. I did not like this because what you expect from us 3minutes isn't long enough to write everything. I also liked the final essay. I liked the final essay because it finished up the chapter and let us see why we read the book and the most important parts of the book.

ReplyDeleteMr Andree did a fantastic job teaching the book "Part Time Indian." However I did not like the quick writes and how much time was given. I think he should do the quick writes, but i also think he should assign it to the group, and then have each group present. So we can see other groups opinions.
Mr. Andree, I think this was a really liked this whole project and I think you did a good job teaching the book. One thing I really liked was the queenbee's & wannabees packet because it was so true & I liked relating all of the different roles mentioned in the packet to all of my friends and figuring out how we all fit in to it and making modifications to fit all of my friends.

ReplyDeleteI really liked the way that you taught this book. The way that you liked to break down the book past the crude humor etc. was great and taught me a new way to look at books. If I were you I may have done more group writing activities next time you teach this book. Otherwise the daily writing and quizzes really help you understand and appreciate the main thoughts of this book.
Mr.Andree, i think you did a great job teaching this book. I realy liked putting ideas together with our groups and then sharing them with the class. I also liked how you challenged us by giving us short amounts of time to write. One thing i would do differently is to do more class activities for chapter review instead of writing. For example the class could get in a circle and pass a ball to each other, so when a student gets the ball they have to recite an event that happened in that chapter.
ReplyDeleteI really liked when we watched the short clips that revolves around the book. I didnt like how short we had to write the quick write at the beginning of class. Overall i really liked how you tought the book.
ReplyDeleteI liked how we reviewed the book each morning with a short paragraph. I think it would be better if you gave us more time to do so because i am a slow writer
ReplyDeleteI liked the book a lot but having to do the writing assignments every day were torture. I enjoyed how the book had such short chapters and it wasn't all child proof with none of the bad stuff I like how the book had all the swears and other mature content it was like watching an "R" rated movie. I didn't like how every day or after we read a chapter we would have to do a writing assignment with at least 7 sentences in 5 minutes I like writing but I don't enjoy time limits they just make me anxious but over all the book was in my top 3.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the way you taught the book. I know a lot of people are going to say that you should've give us more time for the quick writes but I liked the challenge. I also liked the short clips we watched on the " magic box ", they really kept the class running smoothly and added humor into the class. If you were going to change one thing I think you should change the questions in the quick writes. I don't want to give into peer desire here, but they were too long for the amount of time we had. You could just cut the question in half and do two quick writes just to take a little pressure off the student's shoulders.
ReplyDeleteMr.Andree i think you did a great job teaching the book. The one thing i think you should do is give more time on the quick writes. Other then that i think you did a good job!
ReplyDeleteMr. andree, in my opion you did a good job teaching the part time indian book. i didnt like doing to 10 minnute writes every few days, because i feel we didnt have enough time to write them and that we should have talked more about the chapter. i really liked when we wacthed tv clips an did group activites.
ReplyDeleteI thought the book was intresting but I found there was no enough time to do the quick writes. I really liked the extra reading like the outliers and queen bee and the wannabees
ReplyDeleteYou did a good job with the book. However I think you gave too little time on the quick writes. I don't think anyone can write 7-9 sentences in 7-8 minutes. I did like the Queen bees and Wannabes. It gave us a chance to see who the people are in our groups and why. it also let us try to figure out what we are.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the book you chose, and how you managed to tie in a funny, interesting book to our curriculum instead of testing us on a boring one. But one thing I would appreciate is if you gave us more time, like one or two more minutes, to complete the essays at the beginning of class.
ReplyDeleteThe Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian was a very interesting book. It taught me a lot about the way Indians are treated to this day. I liked being able to listen to Sherman Alexie reading the chapters, because it shows how he felt about the things that were happening during the chapter, by saying it with different emotion. One thing I didn't like about reading this book was writing about it, instead of talking. I find that talking about books does more than writing things down, because it shows how everybody in the class feels about the chapter or chapters. Also, while writing I wish we had more time to write down our ideas and thoughts. I barely had enough things written down half the time, because of the short time to write. One thing you could do differently while teaching the book next year is to maybe have the kids, when done reading the book put on a play, of one of the scenes from the book. It could help them get a good grade and also, be a fun exercise for the class.
ReplyDeleteThe Absolutley True Diary Of a Part Time Indian was a very good book but maybe you should stop with making everybody go up and read their projects because people just worry about getting up there and talk and dont even focus on the actual effort that that they put into their project.

ReplyDeleteThe Absolutely True Diary Of a Part Time Indian was a very good and well thought out book.If you were to teach this book next year you should stop having little essays every day or so after a chapter and have a little more group work.I really liked when we watched the short clips and I am sure everybody else did.I think you should of gave use more time to do the quick writes. I think you did an excellent job teaching this book the way you did, that is because you are a great teacher. I like how we had to present group work but I disliked when we had to present ourselves.
i liked the way you tought the bock i would have liked to have more time on the quick wright. I realy liked the 10 thousnd hour activity it made us think about how much effort we give to things.
ReplyDeleteI think this was a great book overall. I think when you teach part time indian next year you should give more time for the quickwrites, because its kind of stressfull to right and make sure you have the right things in your paragraph to fully answer the question in 5-7 minutes. atleast give 10 to 15 so we have time to write the quickwrite and read over it fast.
ReplyDeleteMr. Andree,
ReplyDeleteI thought you did a great job of teaching this book. You kept the lessons very interesting and fun and I really enjoyed how the book as a whole. One of my favorite things was when you showed the class the video clip about the little African American girls and how they appreciated the white baby dolls more than the dolls of their color. It really made me think about how our community influenced these thoughts. On a different note, I wish you had given us more time to write the quick-writes. I think that if we had maybe 4 minutes more, I would have been able to complete my thoughts.
I loved the book in general.
ReplyDeleteThe quick writes were kind of annoying to be honest. They might have been more "fun" if we had more time or less sentences. Some of the stuff that was cool was all the stuff about 10,000 hours. Also i liked a lot of how you showed they discrimination against Indians. I don't know if every one really got how bad discrimination can feel. maybe show a video of someone getting bullied because of there race it might help all the other kids understand how horrible it can really be. I get it because i lived it. Try getting the school to send us on a field trip to some Indian rez. We most likely cant but why not try?
i think you did a great job with teaching this book. the only thing is that for the short responces we should have more time like myabe 15 minuts so we can get everything we need to written down. we also should be able to work with our group so we could talk about the answer.
ReplyDeleteI thought you did a really good job teaching this book. One thing I really liked was watching videos in class about different groups of people such as the African American video where they were choosing which doll to play with. I thought it really helped us understand what was going on in the book. One thing I would give more time on next year is the quick writes because we really didn't get too much time to finish them. I also thought the funeral activity was a little boring and did not help as much with the book like other activites did such as the comics you showed us in class about the different mascots. The comics really helped understand what was going on in the book. One thing you could do next year is have kids act out some parts of the book to help them see what it really felt like being part of what was going on in the book.
ReplyDeleteMr. Andree, i lovd how you taught the book "absolutely true diary of a part-time indian". I liked how you showed short videos. One of my faveorites was "queen bee and wana bees". It fits in perfectly with the book (so, do the others but, this one made the book easier to understand). I think, next year you should teach the book with Queen bees and wanna bees and not do some of the other short clips. Also, i dis liked how we had to do short writes. I'm not saying they were hard, or the questions were to long, i'm just saying that you should've given us a little more time to write (maybe 10-12 min.) because, it is hard to write about the ch. you read last noght in about 7 min. and expect it to be better than a 1 or 2.
ReplyDeleteHi Mr. Andree! You did a great job teaching this book. I especially liked the lesson about Innate Talent and the 10,000 hours. It is important for kids to learn about how much hard work it takes to become a professional. Also, I liked that we got to hear the author's voice read his own book. I didn't like that you gave us such short time on the quick writes. We should have 10-15 minutes to write it.
ReplyDeleteI loved the book, and the way that u taught it. My favorite part was when you taught the "Queen Bees and Wanna Bees". It was interesting to see how girls can act in our school, and to see that we arn't the only school taht has a "Queen Bee". It also went along with the book perfectly and it helped us understand the book better. My least favorite part was when we did the quick rights. Its really hard to write so fast and make sure what we are writing make sence at the same time. If you give us more time on that, i think the writings would be more neat and it would be a better paragraph.
ReplyDeleteOne thing you should change about your teaching for next year is how you always do an essay after every chapter. This is because some people don't fully understand what was going on in the chapter and how to explain that. One thing I liked was how you always had a big class discussion after each chapter, and how we really get into the discussion. This is because it helps the people who don't understand the chapter to understand it, and the people who already understand it help the people who don't. Also, this is all helping with people and team work.
ReplyDeleteThings that you should change about how you teach during this book is the quick essays it seems that we had one everyday even though we did not. When we went over the chapters also you should slow down to make sure everyone understands everything. For the clips from the book you shouldnt do those cause i thought that they were funny but we could have had done something that can make the topic or the point stretched out so that we can visually see it maybe with like a little re-enactment of the topic. All of these ideas i believe will make the learning experience of the 8th graders from now on better.
ReplyDeleteMr. Andree did a good job because I think it was good to work in groups and share ideas. I wish that we could have read the book out loud in class. In my opinion, Mr. Andree did a good job doing the Part-Time Indian Book
ReplyDeleteI liked the reading and reviews a lot but the quick writes are to quick so yeah I would change that. but everything else was good and not boring.
ReplyDeletewhat i enjoyed about this was part time indian was a great way in order to boost many peoples grades if they just sat down for 5 minutes and read the book personally i think you should also have a mid way essay just like the end of book one to see how peoples thoughts may have changed over time etc. although i didnt really like all these other side work sheets however i did think the queen bee one was pretty good otherwise the book and lesson was taught pretty well all around.

ReplyDeleteThe way the book was taught in class was great. There should be more time for quick writes though.
I think you taught this book well, but none thing i would change to teach the book is to give us more time for the quick writes, i felt like i was always rushed and couldn't write a good paragraph. also i think that on the test you should have put some multiple choice and short answer questions, not just a essay. i liked how you gave the essay almost everyday because if we didn't do good on one of them it wouldn't really matter because there were many of them. i think you did a good job teaching, but you could change a few things to make your teaching better for the upcoming 8th graders
