mod 1: Courageous Mrs. Dubose?

  • Atticus says that Mrs. Dubose is a model of great courage, "rather than a man with a gun in his hand." Huh?

  1. I'd have to agree. She is courageous for trying to quit the morphine and deal with that pain.

  2. Most people wouldn't want to deal with that pain, even if they're dying.

  3. I agree with Atticus completely. I mean anybody can talk tough with a gun in your hand. It takes real courage to be a old lady and still talk some smack.

  4. I disagree with Atticus. Mrs.Dubose isn't a model of great courage, she is a mean lady. If she showed courage she would'nt call Atticus names behind his back.

  5. I don't think Mrs.Dubose has courage because all she does is sit on her porch and yell at Scout and Jem and talk about how bad of a father Atticus is, but when she see's him she doesn't say a think like that to him.

I think that Atticus is wrong because Mrs.Dubose is not a model of great courage, she is a bad person who is always mad and grumpy. Mrs.Dubose is always yelling and it seems like she is never happy.

  7. I don't agree with Atticus, because she didn't do anything except for take overdoses of morphine and sit in bed all day.

  8. I don't think Mrs.Dubose is a great model for courage. Personally, I thought she was just a mean old lady. You can tell she is because she's always bothering the kids all the time. She can be rude to them too. But I know what pains she's in, but she doesn't need to take it out on everyone else.

  9. I believe that Atticus is right. It takes a lot of courage to speak your mind the way Mrs. Dubose does. A man with a gun in his hand is not an act of courage, it is an act of a coward. Using other things to protect your self and intimidate others because you alone can not.

  10. i dont understand what atticus meens when he says that ms dubose is courages because she is like not courages at all she is just like old ?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I disagree with Atticus because I wouldn't call someone who is addicted to morphine courages.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I do not think Mrs.Dubose is courages because she is picking on kids when really she she is talking about Atticus and she cant say it to Atticus face.

  13. Sara mod 1) What Atticus is trying to say is that is takes more strength, willpower, pain, bravery, toil, and courage to rid yourself from the addiction to drugs rather that to hide behind the trigger of a gun. I agree with him.

  14. I don't believe Atticus is right because Mrs. Dubose is an addict to morphine this making her not nice. Also she is just normally mean, and this shows that Mrs. Dubose is really critical about others.

  15. If i was in her pain i would have never quit the morphine,

  16. I do not think that Atticus is right. Mrs. Dubose is not a model of great courage. I think this because she is rude, and does not care about anyone except herself. Only Atticus views her as a nice lady and a model of great courage, not the kids so he doesn't realize how rude she can be.

  17. I disagree with Atticus because Mrs. Dubose isn't a model for great courage, she's an old lady who yells. You don't really know if she is a model for great courage because there's no examples that she is a model for great courage. Atticus is just saying that because he thinks that courage is better than a man with a gun in his hand.

  18. I agree with Olivia, I do not think Mrs. Dubose "is a model of great courage" as Atticus says. I think this because, even though the pain she is going through is challenging but, it does not give her the right to treat the kids badly. She can still be nice even though she is having a tough time.

  19. I disagree with Atticus, I believe that Mrs. Dubose isn't a model of courage. Just because she says whatever she feels and can stand up for herself, I guess you can say, doesn't mean she's being a good model. Almost everything she says is rude, especially when talking to Jem, Scout, and Atticus. She doesn't have a need for all the rude comments she says either.

  20. Mrs.Dubose is very courageous . my reasoning for that is she fought the battle of and addiction, with morphine. She may have been mean on the out side but she never actually meant anything she said.
she could've pee'd her self it wouldn't have been on perpose .... depending on were she was .

  21. Atticus is right,Mrs.Dubose has great courage. I think Atticus thinks that because she isn't afraid to show her feelings, for example, by yelling at the Maycomb people and the kids. I think that she isn't afraid to do anything and doesn't care what anybody thinks.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I am a little confused on what freddy is saying.

On the other hand I can also disagree with Atticus on Miss Dubose having courage because maybe she is just saying things because she is old and possible high on morphine.

    ReplyDelete
  23. i think that this quote means that Atticus is better dealing with courage and not so good dealing with a gun but what i don't think that mrs Dubose knew that Atticus was the best gun shooter in the country of Maycomb or maybe she did but no one knows because it doesn't say it in the book that she knew.

  24. I agree with Olivia's last comment about how she doesn't need to take her pain out on everyone else. It sure seems like she's doing that because All she does is yell at both Scout and Jem because she has problems of her own.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Laura, she was trying to wean herself off of the morphine, thats why she was so angry and grumpy all the time. The addiction to drugs takes a large toll on your mental, emotional, and physical health.

    ReplyDelete
  26. What Atticus means is that Mrs. Dubose Has courage to make fun of people who could easily kill her. He also means that she has more courage to make fun of these people than he had when he had the gun in his hand and was about to shoot the mad dog.

  27. I agree with Sara, Kayley, and Evan. I also understand it takes courage to talk the way she does. She doesn't hold back.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Now I see what your saying Freddy and I agree with you.

    ReplyDelete
  29. i agree with Elexus. She is a mean lady and and she is not a model of great courage, all she does is yell and be mean and call people names behind their back.

    ReplyDelete
  30. i think Atticus is right because Mrs.Dubose is a model of great courage and even though she's sick. She's rude to the kids because she's battling with not using drugs to help her through her sickness.

    ReplyDelete
  31. To Olivia, You make some good points. She is mean, she does always holler at the kids. But that is because she is in a lot of pain all the time. She always speaks freely, whether we agree with her opinions or not. It takes courage to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't believe Mrs. Dubose is courages because she is not able to make mean comments in front of Atticus. Also she is rude, making nasty comments about Atticus's court case when she doesn't know much about it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree with Olivia, If Mrs. Dubose was a model of courage she wouldn't talk about people behind their back. Also she wouldn't be critizing everything scout and Jem does.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Another thing Atticus is trying to say is that Mrs. Dubose has more courage than himself.

    ReplyDelete
  35. i agree with olivia

    ReplyDelete
  36. Freddy, hah, it takes courage to be a real jerk like she is...

    ReplyDelete
  37. I agree with freddy she is very courages for trying to quit morphine.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Braelie, I completely agree with you, it takes alot to battle addiction and it can make you do or say weird stuff. hahah

    ReplyDelete
  39. I agree with Autumn. That's really all she does and if she's a "great model of courage" don't you think she'd say something to Atticus? She shouldn't have to talk or say anything to the kids because they don't need to be involved with things kids shouldn't be involved with.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree with you Elexus, if Mrs. Dubose did show courage, she wouldn't call Atticus names behind his back. She is a mean lady.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree with Olivia, someone who has to take their pain out on someone else, especially young kids, should not be called a model of great courage, even if they do have a morphine addiction.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I would have to agree with John on this one. I agree because she does know that talking like that could get you into trouble, because she corrects the way people talk to her.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I agree with jacob on how Mrs. Dubose shouldn't be talking about Atticus behind his back. If she has something to say to him she should just tell him straight up to his face.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I agree with Mia's comment about how Atticus doesn't really see how Mrs.Dubose acts towards the kids. He doesn't realize what Mrs.Dubose says when he's not around.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Back to Isak's comment, I disagree. She may be old and and mean but she has a lot of courage, she doesn't care what anybody thinks of her and shes battling over morphine.I

    ReplyDelete
  46. Sara, i dont understand if you are sarcastic or not... explain?

    ReplyDelete
  47. I agree with Sara. Not only did Mrs.Dubose say what she felt when she felt it , she was also taking her life into her own hands by leaning her self off morphine. Not everyone has the courage to realize they have a problem, never mind take it upon them them self to fix it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. i agree with olivia because that is all she does is yell and be rude to everyone. it is true that she is old but she can keep her anger inside not let it out on other people

    ReplyDelete
  49. i sorta agree with jacob on how ms dubose is not courages because of how she talks to the kids but yet it is still like she is courages because the pain of her sickness so she or i wold do anything to cope

    ReplyDelete
  50. I agree and disagree with Sara. Yes she is addicted to morphine, yes the addiction destroys your mental, emotional and physical health but, that does not give her the right to be so mean and disrespectful to Scout, Jem and Atticus. It might be part of the reason she is mean but there are people everywhere trying to quit doing drugs and they are nice to people surrounding them as they do it.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I disagree with Isak she is old but that is not why she is a jerk . It is because so is trying to quit morphine and she is having a hard time doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I agree with Elexus and Mia saying something behind someones back does say coward.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I agree with Elexus when she says that Mrs. Dubose isn't courageous because she is making mean comments about Atticus behind his back. This shows that Mrs. Dubose is a bit cowardly.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Sara, I agree with your comment and that it takes a lot of strength to quit a drug but still that doesn't mean they have to talk badly about someone.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I agree with Mia. Mrs. Dubose is not a model for great courage. Atticus thinks she is a model for great courage Because she thinks she's soo nice and sweet. Atticus needs to realize what she's saying about him to his kids.

    ReplyDelete
  56. kayley , agree very much so but as some other people have said shes just and addict and that is not ny show of courage but its a diseas . you dont contract it you fall into its trap .

    ReplyDelete
  57. I agree with Angela, Mrs.Dubose isn't a model of courage. She might say what she thinks and say rude things, but that doesn't make her a model of great courage. Also, if Mrs.Dubose wants to show courage by standing up for herself, she should say the names that she calls Atticus to his face, not behind his back.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I agree with freddy that Mrs. Dubose is very courageous for quitting morphine and taking the pain, and for talking the way she does to people.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I agree with you Angela, that is true that you shouldn't take your anger out on someone else especially children, even if you do have and addiction to Morphine.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I i think you nailed it Lily being a little crazy of a drug dose not give you permission to trash talk

    ReplyDelete
  61. I agree with Angela and Olivia, Mrs.Dudose wants to take the pain out on someone else to make her feel beter.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Lily, I agree with what your saying to Sara. Even though Mrs.Dubose is addicted to drugs and what not, she doesn't need to be rude to the kids. Like I said, stuff like that shouldn't be their business too. If she's rude she should be rude to Atticus.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I agree with Angela, she should not be called a model of great courage if she takes her pain out on everybody around her.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Freddy, read my last comment like Darth Vador would have.

..........It was ment to be humorous but, oh well, never mind then.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I agree with Autumn, if Atticus heard what Mrs. Dubose said to his kids he would probably think differently of her because she's so rude.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Yes, saying things behind peoples backs is cowardly, but i think that quitting morphine gives all that courage back and more. now, people can't just do that on their own, they have to got through a long process of rehab and are basically forced to be away from it.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I agree with Angela and Olivia, Mrs.Dudose wants to take the pain out on someone else to make her feel better.

    ReplyDelete
  68. jacob so that should justify the actions directed at the kids . like if a dog has rabies the dog will attack anything that moves
