mod 2: Courageous Mrs. Dubose?
- Atticus says that Mrs. Dubose is a model of great courage, "rather than a man with a gun in his hand." Huh?

I completely dont understand this it kind of confuses me can someone help me with this by explaining? I am not getting the part where atticus says rather than a man with a gun in his hand. Also i think the line she is a great model i think that line is FALSE!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAfter thinking about it, that line wasnt really false it was True mrs Dubose is a model of courage before i had read it wrong and i am sorry for saying that.
DeleteI agree with this statement. Mrs. Dubose has endured a lot in this portion of her life, but she is still living and isn't suicidal. She wanted to die free of everything and that is what she did. Every day she was out on her porch, even if all she did was insult people. She was courageous, in the sense that she didn't ever give up on life, even when she was very close to death.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Atticus. From what we have read so far, I would say it's the other way around, because Mrs. Dubose is just insulting Atticus to get under Jem and Scout's skin. I don't think she would say he is an "N" lover to his face, because he is so kind to her.
ReplyDeleteI agree and disagree with you Mary Kate. I agree that she was just trying to get under jem and scouts skin. i disagree with you because she has endured alot and she doesnt do anything bad with her life. She is courages by not doing anything with her self in terms to harm her
DeleteMrs. Dubose has great courage to talk to people the way she does. I don't understand the "rather than a man with a gun in his hand." part of this line. I think it means that she will think and say more than anyone who can kill you. She also doesn't like a response back. When she calls Scout a " dirty young girl", Jem argues back saying she isn't, but Mrs. Dubose doesn't want to hear it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this statement. In most movies or shows today we see too many people just grab a gun and go out to kill someone. We see them as courageous heroes, but really how courageous is someone who just walks out to kill someone. Real courage is when you fight yourself when u battle your body for what you think is right. Mrs. Dubose has courage because she battles her own bodies need for the morphine.
ReplyDeleteI think that Atticus says this because the kids think Mrs. Dubose owns a gun. He says this to make the point that she is not dangerous, but she's actually a very courageous woman. I also think he says this so that the Jem and Scout won't be scared of her anymore.
ReplyDeleteI think that Mrs. Dubose does have courage because the way she talks to people. Normally when someone talked to someone else the way she did the other person would get mad. Atticus is making a good point in this statement.
ReplyDeleteMrs.Dubose is a model of great courage. Attempting to cut off most of her presence in the world is a hard task to do. While doing this she is yelling at Scout and Jem ,like when she called Scout ," A dirty little thing.'' Atticus saw this because he is older and understands people very well.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Mrs. Dubose is a model of great courage. I think Atticus is saying that she is not mean but she just can't think the same way as many other people. She can't think the same way because she has been on painkiller for many years since she was young.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Mrs. Dubose has a lot of courage, because she knows she is going to die but she is able to accept that. Rather than a a man who is scared so he carries a gun Mrs. Dubose is dying on her own. Atticus is right.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Atticus's statement. Although Mrs. Dubose seems crazy, she doesn't want to hurt people, but sometimes she can with her words like when she calls Scout an ugly girl. She has a lot of confidence in what she says.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Atticus' statement because I think it took courage for Mrs. Dubose to know when she was going to die and, with the time she had left, "break herself off" of the Morphine, even though she knew that it would be a hard task for her to accomplish. In order to break herself off from the Morphine we saw her in the book, have fits before the alarm clock went off.
ReplyDeleteI think Atticus is right. Mrs. Dubose does have a lot of courage. When a man has a gun in his hand he is getting help from a weapon. Mrs. Dubose only has herself fighting through her illness.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Atticus because Mrs. Dubose has been through a lot. She is a morphine addict which causes her fits and she knew she was going to die. Mrs. Dubose didn't show her fear of dying when like most other people they would freak out.
ReplyDeleteI think that means that means that Mrs. Dubose didn't do any harm to anyone only to herself. She took morphine to dull her pain so that she wouldn't be in pain. Mrs. Dubose didn't hurt anyone so there was no problem with her dieing
ReplyDeleteI think that Atticus means that Mrs. Dubose is not a mean old lady but a sick old lady with courage. I also think that Atticus is trying to get Jem and Scout to look up to Mrs. Dubose. Due to the fact that Jem and Scout despise Mrs. Dubose it is hard for them to look up to her.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Atticus is trying to say that Mrs. Dubose has more courage than himself. Because when Atticus says that statement he is talking about that time when he had a gun and he shot that rabid dog in chapter 10, and saying this is showing us that he feels guilty.
ReplyDeleteBrady your comment is wrong. When you say this line is false do you know why. Dont just post a comment with out explaining why.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this blog post because Mrs. Dubose was dying slowly and man with a gun in his hand is controlling what dies. Mrs. Dubose had no control over dying. Mrs. Dubose had to fight by herself against an illness that won't stop. A man with a gun is getting help from something else.
ReplyDeleteI think what Atticus is trying to say is a man with a gun doesn't have the courage to fight the right way. He's saying that a man with a gun is taking the easy way out. He's saying Mrs. Dubose had the courage to fight witout taking the easy way out.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Atticus because Mrs. Dubose is brave. She was a morphine addict and knew she was going to die. She wanted to die free of addiction. She suffered in fits as she withdrew from the drug.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Dubose is brave because it takes allot of courage to fight something that you have no chance of winning. Bravery is just having courage, it doesn't have to be going into war. Mrs. Dubose could have been a little nicer to Jem and Scout but given her situation I feel that we can cut her some slack.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe that. Ms. dubose is EVIL! She yells, swears, and is torturous to Jem.
ReplyDeleteTrue that evan. Mr. brady, don't comment your opinion if you don't know what it means. My interpretation of this excerpt is that Atticus thinks that she is stronger than other people who have this pain. She endures it and sits on her porch everyday. She keeps on living, no matter how bad she feels.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Makayla. Mrs. Dubose has to fight through her illness because no one wants to be around her to help. A man with a gun has a helper but Mrs. Dubose does not.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Casey, Mrs. Dubose didn't mean to hurt people but her words did hurt people. On the outside she seemed like a mean old woman but beneath the surface she was fighting her illness and her addiction.
ReplyDeleteGoing back to comment I believe that Atticus was only using the man with the gun figurativly. Also when you say, "the easy way out", do you mean suicide. I believe Atticus did this to help Jem with a comparison, not to say she was commiting suicide
ReplyDeleteI agree with Rikard's comment. He says that now a lot of times you see people just grab a gun to solve their problems. They don't think about it before they make the decision to kill someone. Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict and lives life untill she finally died, instead of just killing herself.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Casey, but also Atticus said Mrs. Dubose had uncontrolable fits. If she was never an addict then she would have maybe been a pleasant person. But all of that pleasantness was hidden beneath her addiction.
ReplyDeleteI ment Hunters comment on my last comment.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you jacob, there was a problem with Mrs. Dubose dying. There is a problem wit anyone dying. Scout and Jem were just starting to really get to know Mrs. Dubose. They finally realized who the real Mrs. Dubose was. And also Mrs. Dubose did hurt people, she yelled at Scout calling her an, "ugly little thing". Even though she hurt people verbally she was a nice lady at heart trying to end her life in peace. Someone with that courage will be missed.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Mary Kate, that Mrs. Dubose shouldn't be calling people names, but when you think about the bigger picture of how Mrs. Dubose is about to die it makes it not that big of a deal anymore. So i think she does have a lot of courage because she is fighting an addiction as she is slowly dying. That is something that a man with a gun wouldn't know anything about.

ReplyDeleteNot funny stop trollin
DeleteSamantha, I agree to this, but I think Atticus was trying to make a bigger point than just how he shot a dog and feels guilty about. I think Atticus is trying to point out the difference of how Mrs. Dubose couldn't fight this illness. A man with a gun at least has a chance against another man or animal.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Hunter because using a gun is the easy way out. Mrs. Dubose fought through the pain and lived as long as she could. Mrs. Dubose is very brave and didn't take the easy way out.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Katrina Mrs. Dubose took what life had handed her and accepted it. She accepted that she would die and worked hard to die a free women. That takes allot of courage.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Hannah. Mrs. Dubose had enough courage that she didn't use a weapon to help her, when a gun could have made things a lot easier for her, but then she wouldn't have died free as she would have like to. People that had a gun in her situation and used it, wouldn't have as much courage as her because she went through the effort to break off before her death.
ReplyDeleteTo add to my previous post, I'd say I agree and disagree with this because I thought of it two different ways. She is courageous in the sense that she is on the verge of dying, and it would be easy to, but she is living as long as she can. However, she isn't curageous when she insults Jem and Scout she gives low blows, and doesn't really mean what she says. Like a man shooting something something with a gun.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mary Kate when she says Mrs. Dubose wouldn't say Atticus is an "N" lover to his face. On the other hand it seems like Mrs. Dubose has been through a lot and is doing the best she can to remain having courage.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Makayla. Mrs. Dubose didn't have any control over her death. But if you are the one holding the gun, you can control when and where a person dies. Mrs Dubose suffered because she wanted freedom.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Evan's statement on how Mrs. Dubose is a great model of courage. Even though she has been on the painkiller and is now off and has fits, Atticus can understand why she does the things she does. Even though she could say all the stuff to Jem and Scout, it's because of the paikiller.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Kyle. I agree that she was a model of great courage because she wanted to die free and that is what she did. She was very courageous when she would insult all those people and not give up on life although she was very close.
ReplyDeleteno Mrs. Dubose is an annoying person. because she yells at everyone for everything they do she's not courageous she's crazy.
ReplyDeleteAlec, just because Mrs. Dubose yells and swears and I don't think she is torturing Jem. But just because she yells doesn't mean she is not courageous. She was on the verge of dying and she just sat on her porch like she was perfectly healthy. Mrs. Dubose didn't just take out a gun and kill her self because she knew she would die, she just sat there and didn't do anything except take morphine to ease the pain.
ReplyDeleteI do not agree with riley. she calls attucus N.....lover.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Mary kate about her not being couragous around other people but I also think that she is couragous because she is fighting for her life. I think that Atticus can find how Mrs. Dubose is couragous although it seems like she is not.
ReplyDeleteI both agree and disagree with Jordyn. I agree that Mrs. Dubose is brave. But I disagree that when she said those words she did not make anyone mad I am sure Jem and Scout got mad at her inside and bottled it up when she said those hateful things.
