mod 3: Courageous Mrs. Dubose?

  • Atticus says that Mrs. Dubose is a model of great courage, "rather than a man with a gun in his hand." Huh?

  1. I do not think Mrs. Dubose is courageous. She wasn't courageous enough to end her addiction. I think she was too depending on the morphine to be anyhting. But what did Atticus see in her?

  2. I believe Atticus meant that Mrs. Dubose was courageous because she was never afraid to speak her mind. She was always brave enough to tell people what she thought.

  3. I think that Mrs. Dubose is courageous in a way but I don't think she is an overall courageous person. She had to deal with drugs and she is brave to deal with that for a long time and she is brave to try to quit. On the other hand, she only says the insults about Atticus behind his back and not to his face, that makes her fearful and not courageous.

  4. I believe that when Atticus says that Mrs. Dubose is a model of great courage opposed to a man with a gun in his hand he means that she is more courages than a man with a gun. When he states this line he means that it takes more bravery for her to try to end her morphine addiction compared to shooting someone with a gun.

  5. I believe that mrs. Dubose was courageous because she knew that trying to quiet morphine was going to be a challenge yet she still wanted to die free. She knew what was best for her and she did whatever it took to reach it. I do think that mrs. Dubose was courageous.

  6. I think Atticus is very wise to say this, and his reasons for telling his children that were as well, because he doesn't want Scout and Jem to believe that you are brave if you hold a gun. Showing them that real bravery is facing up to something when you know you have every chance of losing.

  7. In i way, Mrs. Dubose could have great courage i think...maybe more ways than one? maybe the way she wanted to slowly quit her medicine?

I completely agree with this statement. I think Mrs.Dubose was a model of great courage because she was dealing with a lot of pain and suffering from her condition. Despite her insults and cruelty i think is was sad she died but she died with courage.

  9. Mrs. Dubose is a model of great courage because even though she was hooked on pain killers she tries to stop taking them. It is very hard to stop something you are addicted to that is why she is courageous. She is also handling quitting very well, she is not going insane.

  10. I completely agree with what Atticus said. I think it takes great courage to break a life long addiction. If i was in the same situation and was in that much pain i don't know if i would have had the willpower to break myself of this addiction.

  11. Evelyn- But being brave has to help others right? How could speaking her mind always label her as brave? All she did was put others down and insult them

  12. I think that Mrs. Dubose does have alot of courage. i think this because she works through her addiction even with some obsitcles in front of her. she made a prommise to herself, saying that she would be free of her addiction before she died. Everyday when Jem and Scout went to read to her the alarm clock would go off at a later and later time every day, when the alarm went off it was time for Jem and Scout to leave.

  13. I agree with Atticus in the sense that since she is old and some what insane, she has courage to even be able to talk to any one without thinking that everyone is going to kill her. Sure she keeps a "gun in hand" at all times but if you were her wouldn't you do that to ? She lives alone and times were hard, anyone could go and rub her and try to hurt her, without actually knowing her you would think she is a perfect vulnerable target to steel food, money, and anything else.

  14. I do believe that Mrs. Dubose had great courage. She was able to stop her morphine addiction which took a lot of courage. She wanted to leave the world "beholden to nothing and nobody"

  15. i think ms. Dubose is better than a man with a gun. she uses her deadly words as a gun, and hurts people's feelings, letting them suffer& hurt more than a gun to the head. Ms. Dubose obviously will not hesitate to kill somebody by shooting them with her feirce attitude.

  16. I feel that Mrs. Dubose would stand up to anyone, and that is what makes courageous. This is so, even if she is wrong and addicted to morphine while she is repremanding everyone. For a woman of her age and sickness she has the courage of a bull.

  17. i agree with this because i don't think Mrs. Dubose is a women that would have a gun in her hand. But i dont' think she's very courage because its hard for her to quit her addiction. If she is a model of great courage she would quit as soon as she can.

  18. In response to Emily's post, I believe Mrs. Dubose was attempting to end her addiction. She was slowly trying to give up morphine to reduce the affects of withdrawal, which can be dangerous and potentially kill you, so she was certainly being courageous even just making the attempt to quit.

  19. I agree with Atticus is right in saying "a man with a gun" is not always the most courageous person. He believes that Mrs. Dubose is brave for fighting her addiction, when she knows it will cause he pain. I think he has an unusual way of parenting when he asks Jem to model his character after a cranky old women.

  20. I think that who ever wrote this thought that the only thing about Mrs. Dubose was that she was mean and nasty. They probably figure that there is no way that she can have great courage like that if she is so mean. They don't know what she has been through, so that person is judging Mrs. Dubose in a bad way. That is wrong to judge her because they don't know about her backround or the real her.

  21. to evelyn, I don't think thats exactly what Atticus meant. I see where you're coming from but Mrs. Dubose won't say anything to Atticus, she only insults him to his children. She is too cowardly to tell Atticus what she really thought.

    ReplyDelete
  22. On the contrary to what is stated above, yes she is vary courageous but she has a terrible set of values. before saying that she said " i want to leave this world behold to nothing and no one". So to sum it up i have to respectfully disagree with Atticus on this one.

  23. I agree with Atticus because she shows that she is having a hard time but trying to get through it. Scout and Jem can look to that for the case when people are calling them bad names like Francis calling her a n----- lover. She can look to Mrs. Dubose who is going through something harder, but that she is not taking the easy way out. Scout did when she beat up Francis.

  24. I also agree with Eryn, she had great courage for dealing with the medicine and trying to quit. But she never did have the courage to say those things to atticus's face.

  25. I agree with Evlyn she wasn't afraid to speak her mind. Even if the comment wasn't very nice. She was mean at times but that's because of the morphine.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Kristina, i agree. ms Dubose was strong enouph to realize she has to stop. she can really fight for what she wants. i also think she knew what she was doing&she knew what she was doing to herself.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I do not think Mrs doubose was not couragous because of her drug addiction. If she quit then maybe i would say that she was couragous.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Evelyn- I dont agree that speaking your mind is courages. I think that in some situations it would be okay but she was often rude. She belittled two children for her own pleasure.

    ReplyDelete
  29. MIa, i agree with you. I think that a gun would hurt way more than someones words. She never wanted to physically hurt anyone. and when she hurt peoples feelings she did not even realize that she was hurting them because of their addiction.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Emily- Good point what I meant was she was brave enough to speak her mind, regardless what others thought. When she put others down it wasn't an act of bravery but a sign that she was brave enough to insult people

    ReplyDelete
  31. tre, she wanted to stop&she knew she was going to die..

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree with you Evelyn, when you say that Mrs. Dubose was courageous for not being afraid to speak her mind. I also believe however, that she was courageous for freeing herself of her addiction. It was probably very painful and she knew that she could die before she freed herself.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Since Mrs. Dubose is trying to stop with the morphine addiction, she's fighting to not die, she's fighting against her fear. She's not just giving up on her life, she's fighting to live. Atticus said she's not "a man with a gun in his hand" a man who is trying to kill himself or herself. I agree with Atticus.

    ReplyDelete
  34. To eryn- I agree. Speaking her mind didn't always qualify as brave. Brave could also mean being kind and holding back your own opinions, even when people your opinions are about aren't there. Like Mrs. Dubose's opinions on Atticus, she told his kids who just got more frustrated with her. She needed to learn to respect others.

  35. To responde to Mia's earlier post, I don't think that Atticus was referring to Mrs. Dubouse's ability to use words as a weapon as much as the courage it took for her to end her addiction, although it also takes much courage to speak your mind as she did.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ethan- I agree that insulting children is wrong but she was brave enough to insult them and deal with the consequences.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I completely agree with Emily because she also said that she was not courageous enough to quit her drug addiction.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think Eryn is right too. Mrs. Dubose was courageous for trying to stop her addiction but she was too much of a coward to say anything to Atticus to his face. I wonder why...?

    ReplyDelete
  39. For everyone who is stating that she is not courages because she has drug abuse problems i disagree with you. Unless you have actually had a drug problem your self you wouldn't what its like to be addicted or how hard it must be to stop. Especially back then there wasn't "Drug Rehab Centers" she was an old lady who wasn't going to try it on her own if she really thought she had nothing else to live for at such an old age and nothing made her happy except for having Morphine.

  40. To Emily's Mrs. Dubose is trying to end her addiction. You can't end an addiction in one day your mind will snap you will be in pain. If you're lucky a mindless zombie with no pain either way it will not end well. You have to slowly get taken off for little to no side effects.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Emily- Mrs. Dubose wanted to end her addiction and she kept trying every day to go longer without having it. I think that she was courageous for trying to stop.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Emily_ Being brave does not always have to do with helping others. It's possible to take on a challenge for yourself and still be brave when doing it.
    I still agree with Evelyn

    ReplyDelete
  43. To Tre- Mrs. Dubose couldn't stop, her body was so used to it and it was extremely hard. She was courageous for trying so hard though even if she could not completely quit.

    ReplyDelete
  44. allie, your completely right& she is the one that wanted to stop.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I agree with that person sitting next to me. Mr. Andre is very handsome today -- sweater vests are tres chic!

    ReplyDelete
  46. In disagreance to what evelyn said about how ms, Dubose speaks her mind freely isn't courage. in some situations it is but that is when you are constructively critising some one not try to bring them down. When Atticus said that he meant with her morphine even though she didn't quit she is taking steps to try to get of it

    ReplyDelete
  47. I agree with Annie. Now i am strarting to think that she was coragous because she wanted to stop but she just could not.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Tre.... she wanted to stop her drug addiction. She was trying to almost her whole life before she died. She was definattly couragous enough to stop.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I disagree with Mia. To be courageous doesn't mean you HAVE to kill people out of aggrivation. Mrs. Dubose is courageous because not many people would say those hurtful things to young children. But, on the contrary, I really don't think she would shoot someone.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Will- I agree. Mrs. Dubose is only brave in the sense of not being afraid to be mean and insulting to others. She wasn't very courageous to get off the morphine, so why is she so brave with others but not herself?

    ReplyDelete
  51. To add to Bryant's comment in response to Emily's, withdrawal from drug addiction can as well as causing your mind to snap, can also kill the user, to explain why she would only go a few hours without any morphine.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I disagree with Emily. I don't think that being brave always has to help someone. Mrs. Bubose has had a lifelong addiction and is brave to try to quit. She knows it will be hard, and will put her in more pain, but she sets the alarm clock later and later each day. I believe that bravery is any time you are scared to do something, but you still try your hardest to succeed.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Annie- I totally agree with your comment on drug abuse. She showed bravery trying to get through it.

    ReplyDelete
  54. i agree with Bryant because it takes time to stop the drug. it might seem like that but it takes a while to end her addiction.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I agree with Victor on how she had the courage to stand up to people. I think that even though she had an addiction she still was able to try begin to go longer and longer everyday to try to stop it. She had the courage to try to stop and also make Jem read to her because it might be hard to ask a young boy to come in and read to you while you lay in bed sick.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I agree with Connor because even though she knew she was going to die she still tried to quit. That makes Mrs. Dubose courageous and she Connor was right when he said she did whatever it took to reach the best she could be.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I agree with Annie, you shouldn't be hating on Mrs. Dubose's drug problem because you haven't had to deal with a drug problem, so you wouldn't know what it's like.

    ReplyDelete
  58. connor- I didn't mean being brave always had to help others. But when it isn't necessary to be rude, you should be nice. Mrs. Dubose is solemnly nice to anyone.
