mod 7: Courageous Mrs. Dubose?
- Atticus says that Mrs. Dubose is a model of great courage, "rather than a man with a gun in his hand." Huh?

I think that Atticus really understands what Mrs. Dubose is going through. Anyone can aim a gun and fire it, but it takes a great amount of strength, and courage, to live life while trying to get over an addiction. Not only was she physically hurt, but she had emotional pain as well, and Atticus never reacted too quickly to the things she said, no matter how cruel it was.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Atticus when he says that Mrs. Dubose is a model of great courage. I agree with Atticus because it is very hard and painful to overcome an addiction. It is admirable that Mrs. Dubose has such courage because it must have been very hard on her.
ReplyDeleteI think he means a sick lady not doing much more than annoying a kid is a lot better that a man who is threatening someones life. I think this because its true and he want Jem to feel better. also because he wants Jem to kind of calm down.
ReplyDeleteI agree Mrs.Dubose is a model of great courage. She was able to break an addiction which is something most people don't have enough courage to do. I think people will want to follow her lead.
ReplyDeleteWhat Atticus is saying i think it means that she is a person that is not afraid to peak her mind. We know Mrs.Dubose does speak her mind and is not afraid of what anyone else thinks either.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Atticus because a man with a gun has a tool to defeat his adversary. Mrs. Dubose only had her perseverance to overcome her addiction. A man with a gun faces a physical enemy, another gunfighter. Mrs. Dubose faces a mental and emotional enemy in her morphine addiction. Mrs. Dubose faces an invisible enemy within herself whilst a gunfighter faces another sentient being.
ReplyDeleteAtticus is a great role model always being nice to the mean but I have to disagree with him this time. The reason for my choice is because i don't look at mrs Dubose as being any role model for anyone especially in front of the younger children Jem and Scout. In this case i do not agree with Atticus one bit it does not stand out to me as mrs. Dubose being a model of courage.
ReplyDeleteI don't really think Mrs. Dubose is a model of great courage. Mrs. Dubose is criticizing little kids. I don't really think that show's courage. I think it makes her look low, it makes her look like she's a little kid too. She makes fun of Jem & Scout's father, I don't think it's very courageous to be mean like her.
ReplyDeleteI think that she is a model of courage because even though she was addicted to morphine she tried her hardest to stop. It would have been hard for her to go through the withdraw symptoms but she went through it anyway. She accomplished her goal before she died.
ReplyDeletemrs dubose is a very weird woman. what do they mean about this. she is sick and needs help.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Dubose is very courages because she is suffering and is in pain from withdrawal syntoms. All of the pain is to get off her pills her doctor had given her and so she can dye not hooked on the pain pills. Most men would not have the courage to face such pain but Mrs. Dubose faced that pain.
ReplyDeleteI disagree I don't think that Mrs.Dubose shows courage because she is rude to Jem, Scout, and to Atticus.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with Atticus when he says that Mrs. Dubose is a model of great courage. I understand she was sick and on an addictive drug but I don't think she did anything very courageous.
ReplyDeletei think what Atticus is trying to say is that she isn't really intimidated by anyone . Also that she wont say things to certain people. she is also not just saying things randomly.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Atticus means that Mrs. Dubose is a model of great courage by dealing with things in a different way than some people may handle them. At that time, it was common for people to use violence to solve different problems and deal with different things. It takes a lot of courage to not hurt a person when they do something bad to you, especially at that time period. He's sees her as someone who has enough courage to deal with things more...mannerly.
ReplyDeleteI think this quote by Atticus means that Mrs. Dubose has a lot of courage because she is trying to quit drugs. Atticus thinks that is more courages than being a good marksman. I think this is a good quote because it shows that just because you have a gun doesn't make you courages.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Atticus. Mrs. Dubose is like a model of great courage because she has been through a lot and isn't afraid to speak her mind. I think the kids see her the opposite of what Atticus does. They think she is mean and they are kind of afraid of her because she isn't afraid to scold them whenever.
ReplyDeleteI beleve mrs.dubose is happy about Atticus not being some crazy trigger finger maniac. He has alot of respect for his gun and knows the true power of it.
ReplyDeleteJAROD that doesn't make any sense. Mrs. Dubose is a drug addict.
ReplyDeleteCAMERON: are you saying you would rather have a man walking around town with a loaded gun? i strongly disagree with you. the main reason is that i would much rader have a crazy women around.
ReplyDeleteJarod, I disagree with you I think that the comment that Mrs.Dubose has an issue with the morfine and has become an addict so what atticus says has nothing to do with guns and fire power
ReplyDeleteKaeli, I agree Mrs.Dubose handled her addiction in a mannerly way. When Jem destroyed her bushes she didn't get angry and yell. Instead, she used it to help her get over her addiction.
ReplyDelete@ Hunter, I disagree that Atticus was trying to say that Mrs. Dubose is not afraid to speak her mind. What Atticus is keying on is that she has great courage to overcome her addiction. Yes, Mrs. Dubose is not afraid to speak her mind, but I think Atticus was talking about how courageous she was to overcome her addiction.
ReplyDeleteEmily, I don't agreee with you at all. Mrs. Dubose is insane. Mrs. Dubose is bored and doesn't know what she's doing. When she says bad things about the children, her head is clouded in the mists of a morphine high. I don't know if she even remembers saying such bad things about the children.
ReplyDeleteI agree with kyle, she probably is not as shy as other people and speaks her mind.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lauren. Even though I don't think Mrs. Dubose has a lot of courage, it does take a lot of courage to break an addiction. Lot's of people have a hard time breaking an addiction, and being sick while breaking one must take a lot of courage.
ReplyDeleteThis is directed towards user Molly. She disagreed with Atticus, saying that Mrs. Dubose was just being rude to children. I'd like to point out that this woman has been addicted to morphine for many years and has been suffering from withdrawals. These bring much pain to Mrs. Dubose and she reacts in the only way that she knows how, with cruelty.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone that disagrees about Atticuses statment that mrs Dubose is a courageos person because she is just a sick little old lady
ReplyDeleteJAROD this has nothing to do with Mrs. Dubose being courages
ReplyDeleteTo all you bloggers the last comment i left was false. So there is no need to be a troll and make fun of my comment. I misinterpreted the meaning of the quote.
ReplyDeleteTo Samantha L: i disagree with you Mrs Dubose she is an addict to morpheine. Although she doesn't care to speak her mind what kind of person says those rude comments to people ... just my opinon, or however you spell it.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Samantha M because Mrs Dubose is a very good model. Mrs Dubose had overcome an addiction that had caused her great pain and instead of quitting she kept going.
ReplyDeleteKaeli: I agree with you, but what Mrs. Dubose was saying to Jem and Scout was hurting them. If it wasn't, Jem would have never ruined her flowers and gotten mad. Also, Jem and Scout never did anything to hurt her except for that one thing, she was just picking on them.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Daniel because he makes a good point about how Mrs. Dubose only has her will to stop her addiction. She is fighting to stop her addiction and it will be very hard on her
ReplyDeleteyou go Jarod! set them straight!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Daniel when he says a man with a gun has a tool to defeat his adversary. Mrs. Dubose didn't have anything to end her struggles with her drug addiction. It does take a lot of courage to try to deal with something like that on your own.
ReplyDelete@ JAROD yes i was trolling but i do not think that is a problem.
ReplyDeleteAshtyn, Atticus means that it took courage for Mrs. Dubose to deal with these problems she had, having to stop an addiction and deal with her sickness.
ReplyDeleteI totaly agree with you MALLORY. I think Mrs. Dubose shows a lot of courage by going threw so much pain just to reach her goal.
ReplyDelete@JAROD: what is trolling ? haha
