The N-Word: Classroom Discussion

Because the N-Word is used so much in To Kill A Mockingbird it was important to discuss the history of the word, controversies surrounding its use, and how to talk about the language of racism. We saw the word used in nursery rhymes, what various writers think about the use of the word, opinions from comedians Louis C.K. and Chris Rock, how it's used in the novel itself, and heard ideas from Jay Smooth on how to talk to people about comments that are racist.

Poetica Dramatica: Poetry Drill Teams

Please help me make this unit better for future students.

In the first paragraph (at least 5-7 sentences) write about positive experiences you had with the project (things you liked, things you learned, improved on, things you realized, things I did well, etc.).

In the second paragraph (at least 5-7 sentences) what are some aspects of this project you didn't like, and explain how you would fix the problem.

In the third paragraph (at least 5-7 sentences) describe a specific thing that happened during your teamwork that was positive and fun. Or talk about how this project has affected how you think or feel about poetry.

If you're feeling especially helpful you might suggest some examples I could use for various devices used in the precision poetry drill team assignment (i.e. simultaneous contrasting lines, or unison lines, or someone performing live).

A haiku is a Japanese poem that has a specific amount of syllables in each line: 5 in the first, 7 in the second, and 5 in the third. A Piaku is a Geek poem that follows the same basic idea. It is a poem that has a set number of syllables for each line that correspond to the consecutive digits of Pi.

Book Spine Poetry

Book Spine Poetry was a fun creative writing assignment we took one class to create and present. Students were set loose in the library to peruse interesting book titles and take some notes. Below is my lesson plan:

1) Explanation of Book Spine Poetry – play with the sound of words (or in this case the words in titles, and how the titles fit together, or sound together). It might be a theme, or a narrative story, read like a conversation, or some other puzzle of your own creation.

2) Spine Poems: Show Samples and Discuss

3) Collect: Students work in partnerships to collect book titles they think are interesting (and write down the title in its entirety, with author’s name). 10 minutes.

4) Arrangements: Students work with their partners to arrange their raw materials into poems with each title its own line. Although you have to use the entire title, you don’t have to use all the titles you collected.

5) Entitled: Students take one minute to create a title that gives some insight into their poem.

In the Important Event: Writing Process Project students began brainstorming on an important event in their life that somehow influenced who they are now. They did a rush-write of 1-2 pages, then wrote a 100 word memoir based on it, evaluated their own work and revised it into a smoother 100 word rough draft. After analyzing 55 word fiction stories that contain setting, characters, conflict, and resolution students revised their 100 word drafts into 55 word memoirs. Those 55 word memoirs were then revised into 6 word memoirs. Both 55 and 6 word memoirs were then presented to an audience of their peers, and critiqued. After that presentation their memoirs were revised and posted here.

Metaphors: The Label Yourself Project

The Label Yourself Project:
a short-cut to understanding you

Geek. Jock. Jerk. Bully. Loser. Nerd. People label each other all the time, and usually the labels aren’t very accurate. With this project you have the chance to label yourself. To create a metaphor that’s a shortcut to understanding the truth about who you actually are.

1)    Brainstorm on characteristics you want to show about yourself.

2)    From those characteristics create some possible metaphors that will give even complete strangers a shortcut to understanding who you are.

3)    From your list of possible metaphors choose one to revise and make perfect for the world to see [15 words max].

4)    When you have one that you think is finished check with me to revise, or to go on to step 5.

5)    In an essay (about 1 page) explain your metaphor and how it shows your characteristics.

In the metaphor “I am a lost boy with ambitions towards piracy wandering a world of stories” there are many characteristics given to who I am as a person.

The lost boys are characters from Peter Pan who fly around Neverland never growing up, adventuring, playing games, and fighting pirates. So I’m a person who likes to stay in touch with my childhood, and love to play games. I also love the idea of flying.

But in the metaphor I’m not just a “lost boy,” but also a “lost boy with ambitions towards piracy.” This is a lost boy that not only follows Peter Pan, but also wants to someday be a pirate looking up to Captain Hook and his crew. What this says about me in my life is that although I want to be like a kid and play, I also want to be tough and cool and do more adult things.

In the metaphor I am also “wandering a world of stories.” Metaphorically this would mean that as I explore the world I would go in and out of stories. What this says about me in the real world is that I love stories in all forms: books, comics, movies, songs, video games, and television shows.

So what the metaphor “I am a lost boy with ambitions towards piracy wandering a world of stories” hints at about me is how I try to hold onto my childhood and games, as well as how I also want to do cool adult things. Finally the world I “wander” is full of the stories that I love.

It made grammar a bit more fun, especially as we saw other students trying to solve our riddles.

Prepositional Riddle Poetry

The comments for this post are the results of an exercise in grammar on prepositional phrases. Students chose a topic they were interested in writing a riddle poem about. They then created clues (each of which contained prepositional phrases) that would lead their audience gradually toward the answer.

During peer edits students studied the grammar of the poems, and gave advice on how to use more specific language, more creative ideas for clues, places to play with words and metaphor, etc.

In their presentations students not only presented riddle poems to their audience, but explained clues, inspirations, and ideas. They were then quizzed on the quizzes they created for themselves (their clues, and the prepositions, objects of the prepositions, and words the phrases were modifying).
